How to Become a Chiropractor - Required Education for Chiropractors

You have experienced the power of chiropractic care, but do you know what goes into making a chiropractor? If you have known Dr. Rob Lyons for years, then you may know that he grew up in the Traverse City area, attending elementary school in Traverse City before his family moved to Lake Ann and he graduated from Benzie Central High School. He went on to obtain two associate degrees, as well as a Bachelor’s of Science four-year degree and continued his education at Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. After eight years of post high school education Dr. Rob earned his Doctorate in Chiropractic.

Dr. Lyons spent years in the classroom, but also completed hundreds of hours of clinical work at the Palmer College Academic Health Center Clinic, while on clinic abroad in Vietnam and completed a rotation in a VA hospital in Iowa City, IA. Upon graduating from chiropractic school, Dr. Rob opened a practice in Tennessee for 2 years before he and his wife had their first child and decided to move back home to the Traverse City area to raise their children close to family and enjoy all that northern Michigan has to offer. He has worked in Traverse City since 2011 and opened Grand Traverse Family Chiropractic in 2015.

How to Become a Chiropractor

Just like other related professions, becoming a chiropractor requires years of education and training. Similar to many careers, where you attend school matters when it comes to the types of practice and focus you want to offer patients. Palmer College of Chiropractic is the oldest and most respected chiropractic school in the U.S. and offered the philosophies and approach to chiropractic care that align with Dr. Rob’s vision. Other reputable schools include Life University in Georgia and the closest chiropractic college to Traverse City is in Chicago. There are differences in the techniques and philosophies taught between schools. At Palmer, Dr. Rob studied with classmates from all over the United States and even the world, including Germany, Norway, Finland, Korea, China, and Chile.

Continuing Education for Chiropractors

Like other professions in medicine, dentistry, and education, chiropractors are required to attend conferences to stay up to date on the latest scientific studies, research, techniques and developments with in the profession. Dr. Rob has attended numerous conferences, including those organized by the Michigan Association of Chiropractors, Standard Process Nutrition, Tennessee Chiropractic Association, and those hosted by leaders in the areas of pediatric chiropractic and sports injury care.

It doesn’t take many visits to see the passion and enthusiasm that Dr. Rob brings when treating each patient. A patient may require different adjustments each visit, all of which Dr. Rob has trained for for years in the classroom and now nearly 10 years in private practice to ensure each patient is receiving exactly what they need.
